Land Survey Crew Chief

We are looking to fill a land surveying technician position based in the Woodbury office, but will involve field work across Long Island, New York City, and occasionally beyond. Candidates must be willing and able to work outdoors in all weather, and possibly even at night on some projects.


Job Description

The successful candidate will become one of BTA’s field crew chiefs. He or she should be experienced in making decisions in the field, have the ability to adapt work plans to site conditions and the ability to communicate effectively with office personnel and clients. Candidate will also be expected to take raw field data and generate basic CADD files on a daily basis.


Job Requirements

  • 4-year survey degree and two years work experience, two year survey degree and four years work experience (G.P.A. 3.0+), or 7+ years of work experience including two or more as crew chief
  • Applicants must have the right to work in the USA. A New York driver’s license and a clean driving record are also necessary.
  • Must be able to operate GPS receivers in RTK and static mode
  • Must be familiar with total stations and data collectors
  • Must be familiar with differential leveling techniques
  • Must have demonstrated experience as a crew chief
  • Good inter-personal skills to work with both clients and team members
  • Previous agency work, such as NYC DDC, NYS DOT, NYC Parks would be beneficial, but is not necessary
  • Great attitude required to take on board and implement feedback from other departmental staff

  • Physical Requirements

    The successful applicant must be able to:
  • Walk long distances carrying survey equipment
  • Be prepared to work in the road, when it is safe to do so
  • Be physically able to open manholes to measure inverts, and to perform all other tasks a land survey crew might reasonably be requested to perform
  • Candidates must be willing and able to work outdoors in all weather
