Gowanus Canal

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) initiated the Gowanus Canal Flushing Tunnel Reactivation project to improve the water quality of the Gowanus Canal. The intent of the project is to reactivate the Flushing Tunnel to improve the water quality of the Gowanus Canal and eliminate adverse conditions.

B. Thayer Associates was subcontracted to serve as Office Engineer during design services during construction in order to document shop drawings, manufacturer and supplier approvals, requests for information (RFIs), and change orders. Other responsibilities include monthly listing of shop drawings, manufacturer/supplier submittals for each contract indicating the progress thereon. The Office Engineer also checks that the manufacturers or suppliers have been approved by the NYCDEP as vendors and provides the services of coordinating the monthly progress meetings and job conferences throughout the duration of the construction contracts.

All NYCDEP standards and guidelines were strictly followed as specified in the Project Delivery Manual, Design Quality Management Manual, and the Cost Estimating Manual.
