B. Thayer Associates was responsible for the architectural and structural features of the extensive pedestrian network for the reconstruction of the swing bridge over the Harlem River which is an important pedestrian and bicycle link between Manhattan and the Bronx.
Architectural and structural design included the bridge operator house, auxiliary bridge operator house, pedestrian stairways and ramps, granite piers, railings and other architectural components throughout the new bridge. Attention was given to enhance the character of the new bridge to complement the surrounding architectural character of the neighborhood. Additionally, the B. Thayer Associates Team provided structural design for the ramps, stairs and bridge house.
Services included presentations to the New York City Art Commission and State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) for review and approval, cost estimates and construction support.
