B. Thayer Associates provided architectural design services for this 297,000 sf building constructed in 1912 that houses SUNY's College of Optometry.
Our team evaluated various design alternatives to accommodate a comprehensive rehabilitation of HVAC and electrical systems. Major spaces within the basement and sub-basement were reconfigured and renovated. Shafts were tailored to provide access to major electrical and HVAC lines from every floor throughout the 18 stories with modified intake and exhaust openings. Two new additional rooftop electrical rooms and a new pump room, visible from nearby buildings, were designed to be built with light gage steel framing and cladding with a sensible aesthetic appeal for cost savings and for shorter construction time. New circulation elements within the rooftop such as crossovers and stairs for ease of access and maintenance of the new spaces and new mechanical and electrical equipment were developed. The upgrades were designed in the most effective manner as to provide uninterrupted services and activities within the building during construction.
